PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58 EPQ
Offered for your consideration is a 50¢ Civil War era note issued by the Confederate States of America, cataloged by the late Grover Criswell as a T-72. The central vignette features a profile portrait of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, presented in an oval frame. The financial obligation, which appears below the portrait, states that
“The Confederate States of America Will pay FIFTY CENTS to bearer”
, followed by the engraved signatures of
“Ro. Tyler”
as
“REGISTER”
and
“E C Elmore”
as
“TREASURER”
(this denomination note is the only one authorized to bear engraved instead of manuscript signatures). This note was printed on pink paper by
“ARCHER & DALY, RICHMOND, VA”
as noted by their imprint at the right, and was part of the
“1
st
SERIES”
. As with many other Confederate notes, this piece was redeemable for specie and withdrawal from circulation
“Two Years after the Ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate States and United States”
(this allowed for a period when the Confederacy could open trade and establish an economy of their own). The back, in common with many notes of the era, was left blank. Notes of this denomination were the only fractional issues of the Confederacy, leaving unanswered the question of how an individual was to receive change for a purchase if it was in any amount other than 50 cents. An interesting and historic note.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as “
Choice About Unc 58 EPQ
”, with no additional notations printed on the holder. The “
EPQ
” designation indicates that this note exhibits “
Exceptional Paper Quality
” for the issue. Light toning is present across the entire surface, somewhat altering the original pink paper, with several foxing spots scattered throughout the piece. A few small pinholes are present at the top, virtually unseen unless the note is held up to the light. The note exhibits irregular edges, due to cutting at the time of issue (these pieces were cut from larger sheets, with probably more than one sheet stacked at a time). Sadly, due to this cut, the upper right and left frame-line have been significantly affected. An interesting and popular note, issued as it was near the close of the war. A nice addition to any Confederate currency or general Civil War collection.
