Description
Late 1890's James Corbett Worn Gloves from The Ring Magazine Collection. He took the Heavyweight Championship of the World from the previously undefeated John L. Sullivan in 1892, heralding the arrival of a new style of boxing that valued technical skill over masculine toughness. These derive from The Ring Magazine museum, with painted white identifiers and horsehair padding visible beneath the tattered leather.
Boxing collectibles expert Craig Hamilton states in his included letter of authenticity that he has located an image of Ring Magazine founder Nat Fleischer holding them at the museum, the best provenance imaginable for gear of this advanced vintage. Certainly gloves owned and worn by the first gloved Heavyweight Champion carry enormous collecting significance.
Letter of provenance from the Weston family. LOA from Craig Hamilton.
