Description
Very Rare and very attractive, original 1890’s Large Size, Chromolithograph Point of Sale Advertising Sign for "Pingree Composite Shoes" - a classic, Victorian High Top Lady’s Shoe manufactured by the Pingree & Smith Shoe Company of Detroit, Michigan. This fantastic, Two Sheet, Chromolithograph Advertising Sign / Poster measures approx. 42" by 54 1/2" including margins and is printed on a light to medium poster paper stock. It should be noted that this is an original, 1890’s Sign - it is NOT a reprint, restrike, reprint or modern printing but an original Advertising Poster printed and distributed in the 1890’s.
This impressive and visually captivating Broadside Advertising Sign features a central, bust portrait of Hazen Pingree – a Civil War veteran and founder of the Pingree & Smith Company who served four terms as Mayor of Detroit and four years as Governor of Michigan. The central portrait is flanked by full length portraits of the same stunningly beautiful, young woman wearing Pingree Composite Shoes. The portrait at the left depicts the woman wearing a summer dress with an impossibly thin waist and carrying a parasol – her Pingree shoes are stylish and serve her well in the summer weather. The portrait on the right depicts the woman wearing rain gear, a bowler hat and carrying an umbrella. Her Pingree Shoes are the perfect footwear for the pouring rain she finds herself in.
Text at the top of the Sign reads “The Pingree Composite Shoe / For Every Day of the Year”. Sharing the center space with the portrait of Mayor Pingree is an example of the Pingree Composite Shoe along with text that reads “A Shoe With A Record” and “.00 Per Pair”. Text at the bottom of the Sign reads “Sold By T. B. Royce & Co. (likely a local shoe retailer). The Sign carries the mark of the lithographer – The Calvert Litho. Company of Detroit.
This very rare and impressive, large size Woman’s Shoe Advertising Sign / Poster is in good to very good condition. The colors are bright and vibrant and the Chromolithography is of the very highest quality. The Poster is clean and bright with no significant areas of soiling, staining, discoloration, fading or darkening to the sheets. There are a number of tight tears as can be seen in the scans below and a small amount of paper loss at the upper left hand corner of the bottom sheet which appears at the left hand side of the center of the Sign (see the scans below). There are also some short edge tears and minor edge chipping mostly affecting the margin areas only. The Poster is “as found” and original - it has never been mounted or linen backed and does display horizontal and vertical creases as issued. The majority of the issues would be greatly mitigated with a professional linen backing and with restoration to the small area of paper loss, the Sign will make a beautiful and impressive display piece.
Again we must stress that this outstanding 19th century Shoe Company Advertising Sign / Poster is unconditionally guaranteed original and not a reproduction, reissue or reprint but an original 1890’s Two-Sheet Advertising Sign!!!
A very rare and wonderful, large size 1890’s Chromolithograph Point of Sale Advertising Sign / Poster for "Pingree Composite Shoes" and a fantastic addition to any collection!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a .00 "packing fee" - the .00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the .00 fee.
