    Description

    Pictured is a Antique Chinese Wing Dynasty Carved Woven Bamboo Stacking Wedding Basket.  The basket is approximately 19" high with the handle.  The basket portion is 13" x 13" x 8 1/2" plus another 3" for the handle.  The handle is 19" to the top and 1 1/2" wide, the larger portion of handle is 3 1/2".  There are 3 compartments top and sides are carved with Asian motif .  There is  a portion with signage in ink in Chinese script.
    Piece from around 1880-1912, weighs 4 lbs.
    Such baskets were known as bakul siah (auspicious baskets)and were used to transport wedding gifts during the twelve day wedding and engagement.  Gifts such as money, gold, the wedding rings were carried during the wedding ceremony by local residents and given to the couple.
    Baskets larger as this were also used to carry snacks, beverages, teas, candles, incense and known to be sianah.
