In 1946, the Mint placed President Franklin D. Roosevelt on the dime less than a year after his death in 1945. He was a good choice for the dime because he supported an organization called the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes raised money to find a cure for polio. Roosevelt contracted polio when he was 39 years old and overcame his illness while leading the United States throughout the later part of the Great Depression and World War II.
