    About Tagua Palm Nuts:
Phytelephas Aequatorialis (family Arecaceae) is a Genus Containing 7 Known Species of Palms, Occurring From Southern Panama Along the Andes to Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Northwestern Brazil, and Peru. They Are Commonly Known as Ivory Palms, Ivory-Nut Palms or Tagua Palms; the Scientific Name Phytelephas Means "Elephant Plant". This and the First Two of the Common Names Refer to the Very Hard White Endosperm of Their Seeds (Tagua Nuts or Jarina Seeds) That Are Creamy Off-White in Color and Having a Textural Grain Closely Resembling Elephant Ivory. The Palms Are Medium-Sized to Tall, Reaching up to 60 Feet in Height. These Palms Bear a Fruit Called Mococha That Drop to the Ground, Which Resemble a Prickly Pineapple. Inside the Fruit Are Clusters of 6-7 Tagua Nuts or Seeds. The Nut is Covered With Pericarp, Which Gets Removed by Animals. The Kernel is Covered With a Brown, Flaky Skin and Shaped Like a Small Avocado, Roughly 1.5"-3.0" in Diameter. Given Strict Trade Restrictions in Elephant Ivory as Well as Animal Welfare Concerns, Ivory Palm Endosperm is Often Used as a Substitute For Elephant Ivory Today, and Traded Under the Names Vegetable Ivory, Palm Ivory, Marfim-Vegetal, Corozo, Tagua, or Jarina. When Dried Out, it Can Be Shaped and Carved; It is Often Used For Beads, Buttons, Figurines and Jewelry, and Can Be Dyed. After the Nut is Collected Off the Ground, the Process of Drying in the Sun, Shrinkage, and Hardening Takes About 6 Months to Complete Before Any Shaping or Carving. Once Hardened, the Nut is Solid, Dense, and Structurally Very Hard, Near Stone-Like, Which Allows Carving. Vegetable Ivory/Tagua Nut is One of the Earth's Most Organic, Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Materials to Produce Jewelry From; Processing These Nuts/Seeds Stimulates Local Economies in South America, Provides an Alternative to Cutting Down Rainforests For Farming, and Greatly Reduces Elephants From Being Killed For Their Ivory.
