    Description

One beautiful old mother of pearl (locally called, "sadaf") button from the tribal regions of Kohistan, Pakistan. This button is a little different than some of the others I have listed. First, it's thinner, perhaps due to many many years of use. Second, it has striations that create a "peacock feather" pattern on the surface - at least that's my interpretation of what they look like. Then again, it could be grass and flowers - I am not positive that is the actual pattern. The incised symbols are made by hand. Speculation about the use of the buttons is varied - some say they are worn on dresses called, "jumlo", others indicate they are used on decorative items. The button is about 1/16" thick but due to age and wear, the thickness varies. The button is worn from years of use but the design is still visible. About 1.8" wide.
Different monitors and phone apps show colors differently. I do my best to accurately document color using both photos and written descriptions. If you have any questions, please send me a message.
