    Vintage 1890's / 1910's Cardboard Produce Grocer Crate Stencil - Pocahontas, VA
    (May be earlier than 1890)
    Made of thin but
    sturdy
    cardboard, this early and simple stencil was used by a farmer or wholesaler to ship certain boxes or crates to a specific retail grocer or produce customer. An early sort of shipping
    label
    if you will. You can see the brush marks of the paint brush that was dragged over the stencil - likely dozens, maybe hundreds of times. When you find stencils, they are typically brass or some other form of metal, making cardboard examples more scarce as they were not made to last as long - thus not surviving the decades in the same numbers as their metal relatives did. Looks and displays very well.
    This example measures 5" x 15 1/2" is still fairly
    flexible
    and and can be picked up and handled. Please use the photos for condition. This will be packaged & shipped securely in a USPS Priority Mail
