Description
The Yemenite Jewish woman wore what is called a Labeh. There are many examples both from rural Yemen as well as highly stylized gold Labehs that were made by Yemenite Jewish silversmiths in Sa'ana. Whether silver or gold, the Yemenite Labeh was worn for dowery, fertility and amuletic reasons. The various shapes of the Labeh imitate the shapes of wheat for fertility. They very often have coins. The coins originally were Austrian coins and when those ran out the Jewish Yemenite silversmith began to mint his own coins. This one worn by our mother throughout her life was called a "Festive Labeh". It is made of colored glass and Pakistani coins numbered "10" in the center of the coins. The glass is cut in the familiar half-moon Middle Eastern symbol. It is missing a few glass beads either above or below the crescent moons of which there are three sections. This Labeh was made in the late 70's and purchased by my mother in Sa'ana in 1981. The dates on the coins range from 1961 to 1978. During this time, sadly, many Yemenite immigrant women who immigrated to Israel began to sell their family jewelry to pay for the cost of initial settlement in Israel. Today however, it is rare that a Labeh comes to market. In the Israel Museum Publication, we provide you an example of a Labeh with coins on page 134. We will be posting other Labehs over the next few weeks. Please note this necklace is non-refundable. This Labeh weighs 13 ounces. It measures 13" wide without the ribbon. No refunds/returns. Guaranteed authentic and reasonably priced. Please feel free to contact us for more photos or information!
